The craft enterprise at Glyn-Coch started in 1980 when the then farmers, Roland and Jean Evans decided to try their hands at ceramics (and soft fruit growing) rather then replace their milking parlour and expand their dairy herd. Jean had worked as a decorator for a major pottery before they had married, and her designs for what became known as Glyn-Coch Design China became a major success. In 1990 they sold the farm. While Roland now runs Glyn-Coch Designs, Jean works as a freelance ceramic artist with commissions throughout the UK.
Glyn-Coch Design china continued to be sold through the shop. The next owners added their own painted glass, and fine art, together with the work of many other local producers to the stock. In May 2000 they decided to move on and we (the current owners, Huw and Thelma Jones) took over.
The PresentAfter hearing of the history of Glyn-Coch's fine pottery, and having a few people turned away dissapointed by the lack of pottery we had on display in the shop, Thelma decided it was time to do something about it. She and Jean Evans (with whom we have been friends since we took over Glyn-Coch) began china painting.
Glyn-Coch Designs have been using colour transfers since the split of the partnership, and Thelma thought, as something different, we would sell hand painted china in our craft shop. Working together, Thelma and Jean now have a number of designs including Welsh Daffodils and Puffins. They do work on commission as well, having just completed a full dinner service with a book to show authenticity and just how it was created.
| Examples of Jean and Thelma's Work |
|
Jean's design of the Daffodils has proved immensly popular with visitors to Glyn-Coch. Painstackingly hand-painted by Jean and Thelma, each item is signed by the Paintress. |

The Spring Flowers china designed by Jean also proves popular to visitors to Glyn-Coch. Each is unique, and individually painted by both Jean and Thelma. Again, they are signed by the Paintress. |
The third design that we have at Glyn-Coch is this beautiful Puffin Design. Another popular design, the puffins take the longest to paint as Thelma and Jean would be only too glad to tell you. |

The Future
Thelma and Jean are in the planning stage for new designs, and will always design new items on commission if someone asks. They plan to launch a new design within the year. We are also producing a small number of limited edition pieces.
