Sunday, 31st January to Tuesday, 2nd February 2010
Held in Autumn and early Spring each year, this is probably the most important trade show for the Gift/Souvenir trade in Wales. Many of the exhibitors have shown here every year since it was started over a decade ago, and come here from all over the UK . as well as from Wales. Date of 2010 Spring show 31January to 2nd February 2010 (To see list of recent exhibitors For more information contact the show organiser Clive Williams of Cymru Marketing Tel. (01792) 536029)
Whether you run a gift shop, bed and breakfast, hotel, campsite or tourist attraction this is an essential visit. Here you can obtain everything from buckets and spades to up-market hand made collectibles. If you are fed up with customers walking off with the crockery, why not stop them by buying some which is unique to your business? Or stock items which your customers will want to buy from you? Many exhibitors do their own manufacturing, so if you have an idea, and just need to find someone with the skills to put it into practice you need to visit the show.
The South Wales Gift Show is also a good place to learn about current trends in the leisure industries, as exhibitors and their representatives travel to other shows and to customers all over the British Isles.
Thelma and Wendy have produced a new range of hand made ceramic jewelry. It features brighter decoration, improved packaging, and SP fittings - all at competitive prices.
We hope to be be taking stock examples of the following, Jugs, Tea pots, Sugar bowls, Cups and saucers, Mugs, Plates/plaques, tureens, vases and Trinket boxes. We have many more items in stock which are un-decorated, so if you don't see what you want, please ask. Larger orders will be decorated to your requirement.
Promotional bone china
Sleeping Dragons of Wales (earthenware)
A video demonstration of a round knitting loom is available on our website. It is intended that more will be added as time allows
Knit your doll a welsh costume - simple pattern for 8" Barby doll.
Weaving sticks - an incredibly simple system of weaving which makes surprisingly tough belts.
Lucette. Knitting on a fork. Used by bygone armies to make braid for their uniforms.
Learn to spin. A simple drop spinner. As used in cottages and great houses alike at the height of the British woollen industry. This might be a simple tool, but it takes practice and concentration to perfect the technique. Once mastered, its use becomes second nature, and useful quantities can be spun.
We will be showing 10, 20, 30 and 40 peg looms. (Many other sizes are available, the biggest capable of knitting an 8' wide blanket of any length you choose!)
Round looms were traditionally used for making socks (with turned heels), fishermen's seamless jerseys, and woolen hats, however, by knitting backwards and forwards over a section of the loom you can knit flat strips of material. It is possible to shape these strips by adding or subtracting pegs from your knitting, in the same way as casting stitches on or off needles. However it is much easier to cast on or off stitches on a round loom, and very much easier to count your stitches!
These are the grown up version of French knitting (also known as Corkwork, or 'Knitting on a Dolly' or cotton reel) Knitting on a round loom is as easier then French Knitting as the smooth nylon pegs have a groove to take the tool. (Wool is less likely to over-tighten or split then when working on nails.) These looms are popular with students of both sexes, and also with elderly knitters who have had to give up knitting on needles due to arthritis. Busy Mums also find them handy, as they can be put down at any time without the risk of stitches falling off. Many people find knitting on a round loom is faster then knitting on needles, and almost as versatile, as several types of stitch are possible. One lady knitted herself a dress, a skirt and jacket, and several hats and scarves for the rest of the family within about a fortnight of purchasing hers first 37 peg loom.
Students use 10 peg looms to make mobile phone and i-pod covers (a good protection from muggers) or party bags.
Make felt at any time, in any place. No water or soap or steam involved. This is a clean dry process that can be performed while sitting down in the lounge. Take care though, the barbed needles are sharp, so this is a toy for adults, or teenagers under close supervision. The kit includes full instructions, tools and materials for projects which can be completed in about an hour. This is an addictive process, though, so ask about the additional materials we supply, and also the fascinating project book we have written to give you more ideas.
Felt Brooches
Ready made felt brooches made by needle felting.
Decorate your shopping bag kit
'Bag for life' style cotton shopping bag marked up so that you can 'needle felt' a sheep design on to it. All materials and instructions provided
Norfolk Horn Knitting Wool
This ancient breed of sheep may have been in Wales a 1000 years ago. It was, later, used by Flemish weavers in Norfolk in 1300 AD to invent Worsted cloth. The same weavers came to Wales and settled in Pembrokeshire after starting our woolen industry, and bringing names like James and Nicholas into the county. Whether or not they brought Norfolk Horn sheep with them, the breed was used more recently in the improvement of the Llanwenog breed - or so I have been told.
We will be showing wool from our own flock of Norfolk Horns (based at Glyn-Coch). We have 50 gm and 100 gm balls and 100 gm hanks. Other wool products may be available on request.
While researching the Knit your Doll a Welsh Costume kit we realised how interesting the regional costumes (on which the national costume is based) were. The red dye is a product of the cockle industry so a lot of red is used in the coastal areas, but further in land the yellows, browns and blacks of the plant dyes are more common. While many regions had crowned felt hats, these were not used in particularly windy areas, or where loads were commonly carried on the heads. Very tall hats were apparently a Paris fashion of about 300 years ago, and being particularly expensive they became family heirlooms and handed down the generations for use on state occasions only. Hence their part in the 'National' costume, and scarcity in day to day regional dress..
We have simple peg doll kits depicting the local costumes for most regions of Wales. The kits include the peg and stand, and all the cloth necessary to make the costume. Full instructions are provided
Cotton shopping bags
Two sizes, the larger typical 'bag for life' size, and the smaller about 1/3 less. They are decorated with photographs of breeds of sheep. So we probably have a bag with your local breed on it. (We are now working on pictures of cattle breeds for the bags.)
Artificial fleece ponchos
Hand made at Glyn-Coch and suitable for toddler to 6 years, 7-8 years and 9 - 10 years
Margam Park is such a wonderful venue for this show that we thought that you might like to see some more pictures. These were all taken on Saturday 12th September 09 as we were setting up for the show.
(Note: Some exhibitors only attend the autumn shows and some the winter/spring shows. For more information contact the show organiser Clive Williams of Cymru Marketing Tel. (01792) 536029))

Our interest in things woolly arose because our small farm has a flock of rare Norfolk Horn sheep, which, in spite of their name would have been here 1000 years ago. Or at least the Universal Saxon Black Faced Sheep of which the Norfolk is the closest surviving descendant, would have been. (I have recently heard from a breeder of a local sheep breed, the Llanwenog, that that breed was developed partly from crosses with Norfolk Horn sheep.) We started selling their wool in 2000, and have gradually added Knitting, Weaving and Felting kits to basic wool products, raw fleece, washed and carded wool, hanks of knitting wool, balls of wool, and finished throws and cloths.
Advertising our wool products has created a demand for us to supply different wools, and so we are beginning to buy in other products for you to try.
We now also sell wool products produced by King Cole. These include Merino type wools which are more comfortable next to the skin. So now you can knit your complete wardrobe from our wools. Merino underneath with warm, weatherproof, Norfolk Horn outer clothing!
Incidentally, for those who don't already know, the Merino is a Spanish sheep breed, which was exported to Australia and New Zealand in the 19th century. Most Merino wool you can buy in the UK and Ireland is imported from Australasia.

We are also bone china decorators, and last year introduced a line of bone china mugs decorated with photographs of our own sheep or a painting of a Welsh Mountain Ram. Due to the success of this line we are now expanding it to include Blue faced Leicester, Jacob, Manx, Lleyn, Cotswold, Hebridean, Wensleydale, and White Faced Woodland sheep. If these do not include your favourite breed, why not have a word with Thelma and we might expand the range to include your breed next year. As bone china decorators we carry out commissions for individuals and also for other businesses. This year we are also introducing ceramic pendants, earrings and brooches decorated with the same pictures.
