Notes

We regret that we have had to withdraw from the St Clears Craft Markets as we have taken only about £20 in the last three shows. Each show takes about two hours of preparation the day before, 7 hours on the day for 2 people, and , of course, we have to make the products we sell as well.  This  is clearly uneconomic, but is what happens in a recession. There have been very few people about to buy, and those that are have little to spend. We have told the organisers that we will return to this show if numbers increase, and are considering the possibility of attending other shows in the area.  We will let you know as soon as we return  to this lovely little show, which will continue without us. Please support them.

Carmarthen Craft shows in Guildhall Square

Setting up stall at 8.00 am on a stormy  September  morning

Taking a break before the hoped for rush. Guildhall at rear.

Looking from our stall to the shops on Red, Blue & Lammas Streets

Thelma's view for the rest of the day

Organised by Crafts from Carmarthenshire and The County Council these shows offer a wide range of crafts made in Carmarthenshire, mainly by craftspeople working n their own. Crafts include

Like Thelma, all the stallholders at these shows are highly skilled crafts-people, whose products could fetch many times more money if they could be sold near a bigger city. Unfortunately, it is easier to ship goods round the world then to move them 150 miles round the UK. The good news is that our loss is your gain. Come to Carmarthen for bargains galore. And in case you are worried about my "hard sell" this show is organised by the County Council, and the Principal Arts Officer attends each show, and knows all the stall holders.

Guildhall Square is, apart from being at the centre of Carmarthen,  home to important shops like B.H.S., Millets , Waterstones, W.H. Smiths and some of the banks. Guildhall Square also links the important shops in Red, Blue and Lammas Streets (and Grey Friars Shopping Centre)  to Knott Square ( where you can see the castle or visit County Hall) and King Street. At the bottom of Guildhall Square turn right to visit the covered market and the brand new shopping centre and car parks.

More information can be found on the County Council Website and on that for Crafts from Carmarthenshire

(Don't be mislead by the entrance fee on the Crafts for Carmarthenshire website. Entry is FREE, and you will NOT be charged for looking at the stalls! The charges quoted are for exhibitors.)

About Fibre Fest

Saturday 20th to Sunday 21st August 2011

The organisers say the following about the show

Wool Market - Trade Stands - Craft Exhibition - Workshops - Seminars

FibreFest brings to life the world of natural fibres organised Blackdown Hills Natural Fibres (BHNF) as a non-profit event. There will be something here to interest all those fascinated by fibre, we aim to cover as wide a range of activities as possible. Take time to get acquainted with some of our fibre animals and appreciate the range of qualities and colours they create in the Wool Market. Move on through a colourful array of Trade Stands where the stallholders offer yarns, braids and cloth plus a full range of supporting craft equipment. As part of the event nationally recognised tutors will be holding inspirational in-depth Workshops, taster sessions and Seminars for you to learn new skills or polish forgotten ones. Additional features include an Exhibition by Bicton's Fibre Craft Students.

Fibre Fest is held at Bicton College of Agriculture
Our stand is planned to be similar to our Wonder Wool Wales stand. However, because of the distance, and the fact that three of us will be traveling to the show we may not be able to bring the full range. I hope to provide you with more information later. Please contact us if you would like us to bring something specific.

Our interest in things woolly arose because our small farm has a flock of rare Norfolk Horn sheep, which, in spite of their name would have been here 1000 years ago. Or at least the Universal Saxon Black Faced Sheep of which the Norfolk is the closest surviving descendant, would have been. (I have recently heard from a breeder of a local sheep breed, the Llanwenog, that that breed was developed partly from crosses with Norfolk Horn sheep.)  We started selling their wool in 2000, and have gradually added Knitting, Weaving and Felting kits to basic wool products, raw fleece, washed and carded wool, hanks of knitting wool, balls of wool, and finished throws and cloths.

Advertising our wool products has created a demand for us to supply different wools, and so we are beginning to buy in other products for you to try.

We now also sell wool products produced by King Cole. These include Merino type wools which are more comfortable next to the skin. So now you can knit your complete wardrobe from our wools. Merino underneath with warm, weatherproof, Norfolk Horn outer clothing!

Incidentally, for those who don't already know, the Merino is a Spanish sheep breed, which was exported to Australia and New Zealand in the 19th century. Most Merino wool you can buy in the UK and Ireland is imported from Australasia.

We are also bone china decorators, and last year introduced a line of bone china mugs decorated with photographs of our own sheep or a  painting of a Welsh Mountain Ram. Due to the success of this line we are now expanding it to include Blue faced Leicester, Jacob, Manx, Lleyn, Cotswold, Hebridean, Wensleydale, and White Faced Woodland sheep. If these do not include your favourite breed, why not have a word with Thelma and we might expand the range to include your breed next year.  As bone china decorators we carry out commissions for individuals and also for other businesses. This year we are also introducing ceramic pendants, earrings and brooches decorated with the same pictures.
