Norfolk Horn Meat has been described thus : -
- They produce a lean carcass of darker meat which is well flavoured
and succulent
- The breed produces ‘nice meaty carcass
lambs’ and the tender meat is said to be ‘fine grained’ or even ‘venison
like’
I have just eaten one of the last shoulders of this year's (2009-2010) stock,
and it really was delicious. Like something from the 1960s when all our meat
came from real butchers. It was succulent, tasty, tender and the roast potatoes,
and gravy were fantastic as well. Compared to this even the best joints from
supermarkets are tough and tasteless. Modern lamb is bred to look good on the
supermarket shelf, but once you have bought it no one cares whether you enjoy
eating it. Norfolk Horns were bred mainly for wool, but at a time when no-one
could afford to waste anything. The farmers ate the meat that they had produced,
or sold it in their villages. They had to face the consumer (their own family or
a near neighbour) the day after they had eaten the meat, and couldn't risk
selling an inferior product. Norfolk Horns as a breed have their origins over
1000 years ago, and were still dominant in East Anglia in the 18th century.
However, they could not compete commercially in the 19th century, and so their
breeding has by-passed, the deterioration that happened with the industrialisation
of the food chain. Get in touch with us NOW and order yourself a real treat!

- These are from three pedigree Norfolk Horn Ewe Lambs born and reared at
Glyn-Coch. They have spent most of their lives at grass with the rest of the
flock, but were brought indoors at Christmas when snow meant that they could not
get at the grass. Since then they have been in a large lose box with an older
companion sheep, and have been fed on hay and a mixture of sugar beet and proprietary
ewe nuts. (Until slaughter 15/2/2010)
- They have been professionally slaughtered (Monday 15th February 2010), hung and
butchered at a well known local family business and collected by us in sealed packs on
19th February. They were frozen within 3 hours of collection. (In case you
are worried about slaughtering, I have watched some of our animals being
slaughtered, and the whole process is very quiet and gentle. The animals are
walked quietly to the stunner, and simply lie down and go to sleep. I have
seen no sign of distress in any animals entering this facility. It is a
small family business, with the most modern facilities and equipment.)
- The packs were weighed and labeled by us before being frozen - so weights
include a few grammes of polythene packaging. The balance used was a Tesco Glass
Top Digital Scale model EK5350.31P with a minimum measure of 1g (if I understood
the blurb.) You may have a similar balance in your kitchen!
- Prices are typical of those charged by local supermarkets and master
butchers following a survey of 7 or 8 websites. (Their prices are remarkably
similar, but we have a far superior product. I would say that wouldn't I!)
- The table above is intended to show the range we have available.
Weights are approximate (see note 3 above). We will try to keep the table up to date, but
from time to time sales may be made between updates. If you request a particular
pack, and it is no longer available, we will inform you and show you the pack
that is most similar to the one you requested.
- Although we requested that all chops were packed in groups of three we
have discovered that one pack contained four chops. We will endeavour to
ensure that you get exactly what you asked for, but we cannot open the packs
to be absolutely certain.
- We have discussed our meat sales with an official of the County
Council on site. We have official approval.
- As the meat is frozen and in sealed packs there is no official
guidance on a sell by or use by date, but we suggest that if you are local and
can take the meat home with you without thawing then you should eat it before
August. If it thaws before you can get it into your freezer then you
should eat it on the same day.
- Prices shown are for meat collected from Glyn-Coch.
- We cannot take responsibility for losses that occur after the meat has
left our premises, but please tell us the nature of any problems so that we
can improve our future service.
- We understand that we cannot send frozen meat to you, by third parties.
