Taskers 4ft Field Roller. Built in 1832

Any questions - e-mail me and I will try to answer as soon as possible.

Adapted for tractors and still in regular use. It is older then any roller in the Tasker's Museum, but Hampshire County Council will neither buy it nor accept it on loan.  (They will permit me to give it to them!) I want to ensure that this wonderful machine is preserved, after all it has survived for 179 years simply on the basis that it still does the job it was designed to do. It is a tribute to its makers. Its commercial value is hard to assess but we are prepared to cooperate with any genuine museum, prepared to preserve it and display it suitably so that others can learn of the qualities that have made it so durable. (Preservation for this machine could either be in air conditioned splendor, or  outside exposed to the elements and given a moderate amount of work each year. The important thing is that it has a long term future in a place where people can learn about it, its design, makers and uses.) We have offered to loan it to Taskers in exchange for an acknowledgement, but have been turned down, on the grounds that they do not accept loans. Why? To learn more about the roller click here.

Roller is 4ft wide and 30 " in diameter, shown with  a 20 HP Kubota compact tractor. The roller is hollow and the spokes carry the legend, "R and W Tasker 1832" Spokes, roller barrel, and axle appear to be original, though bearings and frame are not.

For the last 11 years this roller has rolled about 10 acres of grassland (for grazing / hay / silage / campsite etc.)  each spring, and also rolled in gravel on grass parking areas, gateways etc.

This is a useful paddock or sports field roller with a commercial value of up to £500. We would consider offers - highest bidder wins, but see below - Brownie points earned for good credentials.

It would be great for a  vintage machinery enthusiast, as it is a very old and rare item, which is still small enough to take to shows on a trailer. Excellent addition to a small tractor, or could easily be re-converted for 4 legged horse power.

We would prefer it to go to a museum or educational establishment, where others can learn of its durability and the design features that have given it 179 years of commercial life. Would consider long term loan etc to suitable establishment.

Land Rover type trailer

Any questions - e-mail me and I will try to answer as soon as possible.

This is one of the many makes of trailer that were built in the 1950s and 60s to match the Series 1 and 2 Land Rovers, most obviously by using Land Rover wheels and tyres. It has overrun brakes (Bradley 45cwt) a ring-type hitch and leaf springs.

We have used it (off public roads) for the last 10 years to spread the muck generated by our small flock of sheep, and to transport gravel (about 0.5 tonnes at a time, the limit being the tractor, not the trailer) when we were mending our drive. Our tractor is not big enough to test the 45cwt capacity of the hitch and braking system!

Although it shows its age, and could ideally do with new tyres and replating, its basic frame appears sound, and it could carry on with its current use for many years, or form the basis of a restoration project to accompany a Series 1 Land Rover around the show ring.

All dimensions are approximate

Dimensions  of load box Length 7'6"', width 5'.

Total length c10'6" (inc draw bar) Total width 6'8" (over mudguards)

This is a strong trailer, and will still do its job around a small farm, especially with loads whose weight is spread evenly, like bales, FYM, small logs, gravel etc. (It easily takes my weight when I jump around on it shoveling off loads.) The bottom plate may be a bit thin to take point loads, as exerted by machinery etc., though would be OK if machinery was rested on a pallet, or sheet of shuttering ply etc.

The previous pictures shown here were distinctly unflattering, as the trailer was shown stored for the summer (when we are too busy to get on with estate maintenance jobs), and there were rather a lot of brambles in the background.  These pictures show the trailer ready for work, once again ready for the drive mending job, and general duties.

.  The hitch is a ring, probably suitable for a pick up hitch on a small tractor, or a Land Rover clevis hitch. It certainly works on the clevis hitch on our Kubota B1750 tractor. The prop stand is sloppy, but works. Over run brakes also work, though the pawl which engages with the ratchet in hand brake mode needs a good oiling. (Not seized, but we don't often need to use the handbrake.)
The trailer is rusty, but serviceable
The trailer rather dwarfs our small tractor, and is too big for working around the trees,  which is why we do not use it often, but once or twice a year its extra size comes into its own. This operation, collecting the campsite bins before winter gales set in, would normally be done our smaller trailer, but it needed moving from the yard after the last session of drive mending, and I hope shows that it is a real working trailer!

Massey-Ferguson Finger Bar Mower

Any questions - e-mail me and I will try to answer as soon as possible.

Note the hyphen in Massey-Ferguson, this dates this machine to within about 6 months of the merger between the two companies.

I bought this as it was light enough to work on our 20HP Kubota B1750, allowing us to cut our own hay after our neighbours machinery got too big for our small paddocks. Unfortunately the tractor end of the square section PTO shaft is missing, and I have not yet managed to find a replacement. (GOOD NEWS, I HAVE NOW FOUND A FRONT SECTION AND rather battered safety guard FOR THE PTO, AND HOPE TO TEST THE MACHINE SOON. - WATCH THIS SPACE FOR NEWS.) However, although I cannot tell you what a brilliant job the mower does, I can tell you that when I removed the safety guard in order to be able to show the machine end of the PTO to our local engineers, every one of the original MF bolts were still shiny and in showroom condition. I am pretty sure that this machine has lead an extremely pampered existence.

I have mounted the mower on the Kubota, and it fits well. I have also rotated the pulley and the whole mechanism turns easily.  and drives the blade. The drive belt appears to be in excellent condition.

Apart from the Tractor end of the PTO shaft. the swath-board is also missing, but the mower will still work without it. It is simply a thin wooden board used to prevent the swath of cut grass from one pass falling on top of the grass to be cut next time round. When I test the mower I hope also to add a board to do this job.

Rear view

In spite of surface rust, protected areas of bolts look like new. Note good condition of PTO UJ for a machine that must be over 50 years old.

Belts look much better then I had expected

Mower looks in very good condition, though (easily made up) wooden swath board is missing.

RH front view

Note that the mower even has its original blade guard!

Garage tools

Any questions - e-mail me and I will try to answer as soon as possible.

Standard car wheel brace with sockets of different sizes to suit most common sizes of wheel nuts. It even fits the front wheel nuts of my Kubota tractor, and is much easier to use then a socket and T bar or ratchet handle. (Lighter to carry around then a socket set too!)

Offers about £5.00 considered. Buyer collects. No guarantee

This is rather like a light version of a Land Rover jack with the added luxury of a built in winder. Made in USSR label suggests that this may have been supplied new with a Lada Niva or Cossak, but may fit other makes with a built in jacking tube. With a bit of patience and ingenuity it could also be used for tightening fence wire or lifting out fence posts or small tree stumps etc.

Offers above £6.00 considered. Buyer collects. No guarantee

ITEMS THAT HAVE BEEN SOLD

Kubota topper Model KRM 48, complete, working, but needs bearings SOLD

Torro Wheelhorse ride-on. Model 227-5 Europa 5 speed 42" deck 17Hp Kawasaki engine Restoration project, complete.SOLD

Fella Hay tedder (Centipede) SOLD

This is a PTO driven 4 star trailed hay tedder. It is ideal for use with a compact tractor that is too small to use a mounted tedder. It is a simple machine to use and folds down easily to get through narrow gateways or for storage.Sadly the machine shows its age and one of the 4 stars has completely collapsed, and so although the machine will still work, should be regarded as a restoration project or as a source of spares.

SOLD This was old when we bought it, but has made hay for us for two seasons, the first with all four stars working, and soldiered on through the second season with one missing and still made good hay. It was working immediately before being parked here.

All that is missing is the disk that holds the four supports for the tines

If my computer worked as well as this machine I would have a picture of it (the Fella) working behind my little 20HP Kubota B1750 HST, in a good hay crop. SOLD

Tractor Link Box

This one may even have been made by Massey Ferguson (though later then the original churn carrier designed for the T20 series), but appears to have been dumped in a hedge when the plates wore out. The frame, though, seems OK. Should be a worthwhile project for someone looking for a contemporary implement for a 30-50HP tractor from the 1950s and 60s.

Sold

The box section frame appears to be useable. There is some flaking, but it is not too bad. I value it as the base for someone's project at about £50 I'm not sure of the maker,  but it looks like an early 1960s box intended for David Brown 780/880, Ford 3/4000, MF 135/165 etc. It must have been a good strong tool in its time, and could be again.

Teagle Finger Bar Hedge Trimmer SOLD

This is almost certainly a Silver Bullet model, designed for tractors like the MF 135 or Fordson Dexta. We have used it on our 20HP Kubota B1750, but in practice the hedge-trimmer proved to have too much off-centre weight for the tractor linkage, which is designed to lift only 180kg mounted directly behind the tractor. This hedge trimmer should work well behind any tractor designed to lift 0.5tonnes at the link ends - and that includes most modern (post about 1995) compacts.

Mounting the hedge trimmer on the tractor takes a bit of working out. It mounts on both lower links, but on one side the lift rod is removed, leaving the lower link to float and the mowers "top link" (shown in front of the machine) is attached to the end of the lift arm in place of the lift rod. This causes the trimmer frame to roll sideways when the 3PL is raised, and this in turn raises or lowers the cutting head.

Chain Harrow SOLD

This is a light 4ft seed harrow and is probably about 30 years old. We have been using it (for the last 10 years) behind our 4ft roller to drag our grass in the spring. It does a reasonable job in levelling fresh molehills, spreading sheep droppings and dragging the thatch out of our permanent pasture. Its relatively low weight means that it is fairly easy to transport between paddocks and to move about when not

  SOLD

Chain Harrow originally used as light seed covering harrow, has been an effective grass harrow for the last 10 years used behind the roller illustrated here. For more information about the roller click here or scroll up.
