RH side. Catch position |
RH side. 'Sheep lifted' |
This is a lightweight and portable sheep turnover crate. Possibly made by Commodor? (If so costs £425 new) | It is suitable for fat lambs and adult sheep of small or medium sized breeds. Our Norfolk Horn Rams (c95kg with horns) are too wide. |
Entrance. 'Sheep lifted' |
Exit. 'Sheep lifted' |
The sheep walk in and are lifted onto their backs by muscle powered mechanism. I've used it for sheep up to 75kg. (Easy up to about 65kg!) | Sheep are held securely and seemed happy with the
experience.
It's a simple machine and easy to operate. |
Instructions 1 and 2 on side |
Instructions 3 and 4 |
Good (and still very visible) instructions are printed on the side.
Handles extended and wheels down to move as wheelbarrow. |
When empty the handles are pulled upward, which pushes the wheels down, and the machine can be moved on hard surfaces like a wheelbarrow. | We have a small flock (25 adult sheep) and this was a useful aid to hoof trimming etc when we started. With experience we now usually do these jobs in field pens where this machine is less suitable. But it has been used this year with great success. | A useful little machine in good working order. Would be ideal for l flocks where batches of up to 50 or more ewes or fat lambs need hoof treatment etc. on concrete yard |

It is a Farmway Sturdilux (made at Gilesgate Moor, Durham) model number CRB 13746. (I think, the plate is marked between the R and the 3) It is a well made machine made of substantial steel plate, though is not too heavy for our small Kubota B1750 - so I assume that it is well designed as well! The body swings to allow brushing across the path of the tractor, and brush pressure is controlled by adjustable height wheels to the rear. These wheels are large tough looking nylon wheels, so no problems with flat tyres or damage to delicate surfaces. We bought it as part of a 'tractor +' deal in about 2001 and although it had been used it was still in almost show room condtition. We haven't had a lot of use for it, but it was just to useful to sell, and I had ambitions to redesign our barn, which would have made it much too useful. It has been barn stored most of the time, but has to move out at lambing. |

RH side. |
Plenty of life left in brush and wheels |
A simple rugged machine. 6ft wide and works well on our Kubota 1750, but would do on a bigger tractor as well. | Body can be swung to left or right, and wheel height is adjustable so it can work on flat concrete in buildings and on roads etc. |
|
Typical! You move the machine outside for a picture and the background is too complicated to see anything! |
So here's one with some of the background removed. Any help? The projection under the PTO shaft is the stand, which is formed of two pieces of strong box section adjusted by means of a substantial pin which fits into a choice of holes. |
We bought the machine as part of a package with our tractor several years ago. Since then we have found little work for it, but it has always done a good job when asked.

| Plaster of Paris moulds for slip casting
pottery . Offers about £2 - £30 depending on size. Buyer collects. Phone 01994 231

We have maybe 50 moulds for sale, as bad backs mean that we can no longer cope with heaving round the bigger ones. The pictures are meant to show the range of condition, rather then the actual moulds for sale. These were simply the nearest moulds to the door. Some moulds have been used many times with terracotta clay, others are almost new, or have been used with white clays. Most have been in store for 18 months and should be ready to use as soon as you get them home. If you are looking for a particular mould please ask us. |

To mould anything from honey pots to large bowls, jugs. urns, planters, fairy castles, figurines, welly boots etc. | Most of these moulds have been used commercially but have plenty of life left in them. |
| For new potters. These moulds come in several parts that fit together when in use. The shape is on the inside of the mould. To use, fit the parts together, and secure with the substantial rubber bands. (To give an idea how substantial the rubber bands are they are often made from the inner tubes of car tyres.) Pour the clay slip (a specific mixture of clay and water) through the hole in the top of the mould and wait for about 30 minutes while the plaster absorbs water from the slip. As the water leaves the slip the clay settles out on the inner surface of the mould. At the end of the half hour, you pour the surplus slip out. (The surplus slip can be reused.) Then leave the mould upside down for 4 hours to drain, while the clay inside hardens. After 4 hours you can gently dismantle the mould and expose your brand new vase - or whatever. Then you have to remove the mould marks (the seams which form at the joints of the mould) , the collar and so on. (Cheep cups often have a sharp ridge on the handles which are mould marks. As proper potters you , of course, will remove the mould marks to ensure that your customers enjoy using your products.) Leave to dry for a couple of weeks, and then fire and glaze and fire again! (Timings and other details may vary with the particular mould or type of clay you are using and with temperature and humidity in the pottery.) | |||
| Steel framed fibre glass pouring table, for draining slip casting moulds. Offers about £150: Buyer collects (Price guide Pottery Craft charge £567 for a new 4' moulding table, or over £1000 for a slip casting machine, both currently (4/4/10 ) out of stock.) Phone 01994 231 867 or e-mail | ||
| Standard pouring table. In used. condition. Working order.
No grids
10' x 2'3" x 2'6" high |
This table belonged to a (commercial potter) friend of ours and has been stored since he retired. It is too big for our pottery.
| For new potters. Slip casting moulds are filled with slip (liquid clay) and left for about half an hour while the plaster (of which the mould is made) absorbs water from the slip, leaving a layer of clay on the inside of the mould. Excess slip is then poured out of the mould, which is then placed upside down on a grid above the pouring table, while the moulded clay hardens and all remaining liquid slip drains away, and can be collected in a bucket placed under the middle of he table. After about 4 hours the mould can be opened and the new clay product left to air dry for a couple of weeks until it is dry enough to fire. This table could be used to produce up to 50 items of tableware (depending on size) a day. | ||

This was our first kiln, and has been a useful tool, though has been our spare kiln since we acquired our new computer controlled models. Is complete, but needs minor maintenance.
| This kiln will do the first bisque firing for bone china, earthenware, stoneware and will fire most glazes. It is, though, a simple machine and needs manual control. It needs a 30 amp power supply, which is equivalent to that for a domestic oven. We recommend that a qualified electrician arranges the power supply for you, and that the kiln is sited in a well ventilated area. As can be seen in the picture we have had it in a conservatory ( with additional ventilation) where it is separated from the house by a double glazed door. Warning: This is quite a heavy piece of kit. | ||
